In
Libya, more NATO air strikes have reportedly struck the capital Tripoli
- following a defiant broadcast from Colonel Gaddafi. Meeting in
Washington, Barack Obama and NATO head Anders Fogh Rasmussen agreed to
continue bombing, as long as the Libyan leader puts up a fight. But as
RT's Lauren Lyster reports, the motivation of the U.S.-led Alliance is
under scrutiny

From 1104A:

In
their summit meeting in southern China, the leaders of Brazil, Russia,
India, China, and South Africa unanimously condemned the Libya
bombings, AFP reported Thursday.
The group rejected the use of force in the Middle East and
North Africa in a draft statement.
"We
share the principle that the use of force should be avoided. We
maintain that the independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial
integrity of each nation should be respected," the countries which
represent more than 40 percent of the world's population said in the
statement.

South Africa was one of the countries that voted in favor of the UN
Security Council resolution authorizing the airstrikes.
However,
after visiting Tripoli on Sunday, South African President Jacob Zuma
called on NATO to stop the attacks which have claimed the lives of
hundreds of civilians in the past weeks.

Democratic
Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio joins us to discuss why he thinks
President Obama may have committed an "impeachable offense" by
committing U.S. military forces to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya
without congressional approval. "This president has assumed power that
no president, not even President Bush, has assumed,” Kucinich says. “I
think that we need to focus on this, not as a matter of whether we like
President Obama or not, not as a matter of whether we are Democrats or
not, but whether or not we understand the basic constitutional
principles of the separation of power."

Gaddafi's youngest son killed in
NATO strike

Libyan government
spokesman says air strike kills Saif al-Arab Gaddafi and three of the
Libyan leader's grandsons.

According
to the IMF, Libya’s Central Bank is 100% state owned. The IMF estimates
that the bank has nearly 144 tons of gold in its vaults.

It is significant that in the months running up to the UN resolution
that allowed the US and its allies to send troops into Libya, Muammar
al-Qaddafi was openly advocating the creation of a new currency that
would rival the dollar and the euro. In fact, he called upon African
and Muslim nations to join an alliance that would make this new
currency, the gold dinar, their primary form of money and foreign
exchange. They would sell oil and other resources to the US and the
rest of the world only for gold dinars.

The US, the other G-8
countries, the World Bank, IMF, BIS, and multinational corporations do
not look kindly on leaders who threaten their dominance over world
currency markets or who appear to be moving away from the international
banking system that favors the corporatocracy. Saddam Hussein had
advocated policies similar to those expressed by Qaddafi shortly before
the US sent troops into Iraq.

The
U.S. President is under fire from Congress over the military campaign
in Libya, which is continuing despite not having the approval of
lawmakers. Barack Obama has rejected accusations that the law is being
broken, arguing that America is only playing a supporting role through
NATO, which makes it legal. RT's Gayane Chichakyan has more.

NATO's
warplanes have targeted the Libyan capital in more daytime raids. But
the very credibility of the campaign could be fatally damaged, if
Congress forces Barack Obama to abandon operations. Author David
Swanson says the problem is that there's political confusion over
exactly what's happening in Libya

The Lies behind the West's War on Libya

Are Those Who Want to Export Democracy Themselves Democrats?
by Jean-Paul
Pougala
t
was Gaddafi’s Libya that offered all of Africa its first revolution in
modern times – connecting the entire continent by telephone,
television, radio broadcasting and several other technological
applications such as telemedicine and distance teaching. And thanks to
the WMAX radio bridge, a low cost connection was made available across
the continent, including in rural areas.
It
began in 1992, when 45 African nations established RASCOM (Regional
African Satellite Communication Organization) so that Africa would have
its own satellite and slash communication costs in the continent. This
was a time when phone calls to and from Africa were the most expensive
in the world because of the annual US$500 million fee pocketed by
Europe for the use of its satellites like Intelsat for phone
conversations, including those within the same country.
An
African satellite only cost a onetime payment of US$400 million and the
continent no longer had to pay a US$500 million annual lease. Which
banker wouldn’t finance such a project? But the problem remained – how
can slaves, seeking to free themselves from their master’s exploitation
ask the master’s help to achieve that freedom? Not surprisingly, the
World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the USA, Europe only made
vague promises for 14 years. Gaddafi put an end to these futile pleas
to the western ‘benefactors’ with their exorbitant interest rates. The
Libyan guide put US$300 million on the table; the African Development
Bank added US$50 million more and the West African Development Bank a
further US$27 million – and that’s how Africa got its first
communications satellite on 26 December 2007.
China
and Russia followed suit and shared their technology and helped launch
satellites for South Africa, Nigeria, Angola, Algeria and a second
African satellite was launched in July 2010. The first totally
indigenously built satellite and manufactured on African soil, in
Algeria, is set for 2020. This satellite is aimed at competing with the
best in the world, but at ten times less the cost, a real challenge.
This
is how a symbolic gesture of a mere US$300 million changed the life of
an entire continent. Gaddafi’s Libya cost the West, not just depriving
it of US$500 million per year but the billions of dollars in debt and
interest that the initial loan would generate for years to come and in
an exponential manner, thereby helping maintain an occult system in
order to plunder the continent.

News
reports in mid-March, such as those by McClatchy reporters Jonathan
Landay, Warren Strobel and Shashank Bengali, contain no claims of
anything approaching a "crime against humanity," the allegation
So
Gaddafi was facing a formal armed insurrection - not a protest movement
demanding "democracy" - led by a shadowy entity based in Benghazi, one
of whose more diligent enterprises appears to have been the
establishment of a 'central bank'. Seven days later, Resolution 1973
made clear that attempts to suppress this insurrection would elicit
armed intervention by Nato.
In
other words, the only serious challenge to Gaddafi is a pirate
coalition of Nato forces operating without the slightest mandate in
international law, currently engaged in bombing a major city - Tripoli
- filled with civilians.
America's
clients in Bahrain and Riyadh can watch the undignified pantomime with
a tranquil heart, welcoming this splendid demonstration that they have
nothing to fear from Obama's fine speeches or Clinton's references to
democratic aspirations, well aware that Nato's warplanes and
helicopters are operating under the usual double standard - with the
Western press furnishing all appropriate services

False pretense for war in Libya?

EVIDENCE
IS now in that President Barack Obama grossly exaggerated the
humanitarian threat to justify military action in Libya. The president
claimed that intervention was necessary to prevent a “bloodbath’’ in
Benghazi, Libya’s second-largest city and last rebel stronghold.
But
Human Rights Watch has released data on Misurata, the next-biggest city
in Libya and scene of protracted fighting, revealing that Moammar
Khadafy is not deliberately massacring civilians but rather narrowly
targeting the armed rebels who fight against his government.
Misurata’s
population is roughly 400,000. In nearly two months of war, only 257
people — including combatants — have died there. Of the 949 wounded,
only 22 — less than 3 percent — are women. If Khadafy were
indiscriminately targeting civilians, women would comprise about half
the casualties.
Libya’s
air force, prior to imposition of a UN-authorized no-fly zone, targeted
rebel positions, not civilian concentrations. Despite ubiquitous
cellphones equipped with cameras and video, there is no graphic
evidence of deliberate massacre. Images abound of victims killed or
wounded in crossfire — each one a tragedy — but that is urban warfare,
not genocide.

Nato to Extend Libyan Campaign by 90 Days - James Corbett on RT

Two
French lawyers said they planned to initiate legal proceedings against
French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday for crimes against humanity
over the NATO-led military campaign in Libya.
Jacques
Verges and Roland Dumas (R and L in the photo respectively) offered to
represent the families who fell victims of the NATO bombing campaign.
Despite
Western denial of civilian casualties caused by the two-month-old
bombings, Dumas said he had seen several civilian victims at a hospital

20,000 victims.

The
objective of the war against Libya is not just its oil reserves (now
estimated at 60 billion barrels), which are the greatest in Africa and
whose extraction costs are among the lowest in the world, nor the
natural gas reserves of which are estimated at about 1,500 billion
cubic meters. In the crosshairs of the "willing" behind operation
“Unified Protector” there are sovereign wealth funds, capital that the
Libyan state has invested abroad.
The
management of sovereign funds has however created a new mechanism of
power and corruption in the hands of ministers and senior officials,
which probably in part escaped the control of Gaddafi himself: this is
confirmed by the fact that, in 2009, he proposed that the 30 billion in
oil revenues go "directly to the Libyan people." This exacerbated the
fractures within the Libyan government.

BBC
did however concede that nearly all of their reports were impossible to
confirm, as they were all entirely based on opposition "witness

This
week, Russian military officials boldly asserted that such air strikes
never took place, and even the US Department of Defense was forced to
concede that such attacks could not be confirmed.

Secretary of
Defense Robert Gates was asked recently "Do you see any evidence that
he [Qaddafi] actually has fired on his own people from the air?" to
which he responded by saying, "We’ve seen the press reports, but we
have no confirmation of that." Admiral Mullen added, "That’s correct.
We’ve seen no confirmation whatsoever."
Strangely

unverified atrocities are only growing stronger.

On
February 16, 2009, Gaddafi took a step further and called on Libyans to
back his proposal to dismantle the government and to distribute the oil
wealth directly to the 5 million inhabitants of the country.

However,
his plan to deliver oil revenues directly to the Libyan people met
opposition by senior officials who could lose their jobs due to a
parallel plan by Gaddafi to rid the state of corruption.
Some
officials, including Prime Minister Al-Baghdadi, Ali Al-Mahmoudi and
Farhat Omar Bin Guida, of the Central Bank, told Gaddafi that the
measure could harm the country's economy in the long term due to
"capital flight."
"Do not be afraid to directly
redistribute the oil money and create fairer governance structures that
respond to people's interests," Gaddafi said in a Popular Committee.

The Popular Committees are the backbone of Libya. Through them citizens
are represented at the district level.
"The
Administration has failed and the state's economy has failed. Enough is
enough. The solution is for the Libyan people to directly receive oil
revenues and decide what to do with them," Gaddafi said in a speech
broadcast on state television. To this end, the Libyan leader urged a
radical reform of government bureaucracy.

Wow That Was Fast! Libyan Rebels Have Already Established A New Central
Bank Of Libya

March 29, 2011
The
rebels in Libya are in the middle of a life or death civil war and
Moammar Gadhafi is still in power and yet somehow the Libyan rebels
have had enough time to establish a new Central Bank of Libya and form
a new national oil company. Perhaps when this conflict is over those
rebels can become time management consultants. They sure do get a lot
done. What a skilled bunch of rebels – they can fight a war during the
day and draw up a new central bank and a new national oil company at
night without any outside help whatsoever. If only the rest of us were
so versatile! But isn’t forming a central bank something that could be
done afterthe civil war is over? According to Bloomberg, the
Transitional National Council has “designated the Central Bank of
Benghazi as a monetary authority competent in monetary policies in
Libya and the appointment of a governor to the Central Bank of Libya,
with a temporary headquarters in Benghazi.” Apparently someone felt
that it was very important to get pesky matters such as control of the
banks and control of the money supply out of the way even before a new
government is formed.

which probably in part escaped the control of Gaddafi himself: this is
confirmed by the fact that, in 2009, he proposed that the 30 billion in
oil revenues go "directly to the Libyan people." This exacerbated the
fractures within the Libyan government.
