Overall, IARC concluded that there was “limited evidence” that glyphosate can cause non-Hodgkin lymphoma and “convincing evidence” that glyphosate can cause cancer in laboratory animals. The conclusion would have been for “sufficient” evidence of cancer problems for humans, but for one large U.S. study run by the federal government that did not show connections between cancer and glyphosate, Forastiere said.
The team ultimately decided the weight of the evidence was not strong enough to say glyphosate was definitively carcinogenic, but there was more than enough evidence for the caveat “probably” carcinogenic.
The industry message to EPA is loud and clear: Independent research and international scientific findings should not take precedence over protection of a multi-billion-dollar agent like glyphosate. The public can only watch, wait, and hope that the EPA doesn’t listen.

What's Wrong With Roundup?
Roundup inhibits enzymes involved in the detoxification of chemicals in the body. Test animals injected with glyphosate showed depressed function of cytochrome P450 and two other enzymes which are vital to the body's processing of toxicants (Heitanen 1983). At least two enzymatic steps are involved in the processing of toxicants in the liver of humans; the first involves cytochrome P450 enzymes and the second involves glutathione S tranferases (GSTs). People who do not possess certain GSTs due to genetic variation (estimated at approximately 50% of the Caucasian population), may have a greater risk of some types of cancer (Perera 1996).
An unknown percentage of Roundup's formulation is composed of Polyethoxethyleneamine (POEA), which is a surfactant added to enhance the performance of glyphosate. POEA is three times as acutely toxic as glyphosate (Sawada 1988), is irritating to eyes and skin, and causes gastrointestinal problems(Monsanto 1992). POEA is contaminated by 1,4 dioxane during the manufacturing process (NCAP 1990). U.S.EPA regards 1,4 dioxane as a probable human carcinogen. OEHHA recognizes 1,4 dioxane as a carcinogen under Proposition 65.

RoundUp and Cholinesterase Inhibition
In 1988, Yusuke Sawada, et al. did a study in which they concluded that the surfactant in RoundUp (POEA) is more toxic than RoundUp's main ingredient, glyphosate. A study by Servizi et al in 1987 found that POEA is two to three times more toxic than glyphosate, and that the synergy of the two ingredients may even be more acutely toxic than the two ingredients combined.
Glyphosate's degradation pathway shows that, depending one which soil organisms are present, glyphosate degrades into sarcosine, formaldehyde, AMPA, and Methylamine.
Formaldehyde is not only carcinogenic, but impairs the serine cycle, an important part of the human metabolic process. According to a document on the ESTHER database, "cholinesterases are readily phosphorylated at the active site serine by a variety of organophosphorus agents (OP) and carbamates."

Overall, IARC concluded that there was “limited evidence” that glyphosate can cause non-Hodgkin lymphoma and “convincing evidence” that glyphosate can cause cancer in laboratory animals. The conclusion would have been for “sufficient” evidence of cancer problems for humans, but for one large U.S. study run by the federal government that did not show connections between cancer and glyphosate, Forastiere said.
The team ultimately decided the weight of the evidence was not strong enough to say glyphosate was definitively carcinogenic, but there was more than enough evidence for the caveat “probably” carcinogenic.
The industry message to EPA is loud and clear: Independent research and international scientific findings should not take precedence over protection of a multi-billion-dollar agent like glyphosate. The public can only watch, wait, and hope that the EPA doesn’t listen.

Roundup inhibits enzymes involved in the detoxification of chemicals in the body. Test animals injected with glyphosate showed depressed function of cytochrome P450 and two other enzymes which are vital to the body's processing of toxicants (Heitanen 1983). At least two enzymatic steps are involved in the processing of toxicants in the liver of humans; the first involves cytochrome P450 enzymes and the second involves glutathione S tranferases (GSTs). People who do not possess certain GSTs due to genetic variation (estimated at approximately 50% of the Caucasian population), may have a greater risk of some types of cancer (Perera 1996).
An unknown percentage of Roundup's formulation is composed of Polyethoxethyleneamine (POEA), which is a surfactant added to enhance the performance of glyphosate. POEA is three times as acutely toxic as glyphosate (Sawada 1988), is irritating to eyes and skin, and causes gastrointestinal problems(Monsanto 1992). POEA is contaminated by 1,4 dioxane during the manufacturing process (NCAP 1990). U.S.EPA regards 1,4 dioxane as a probable human carcinogen. OEHHA recognizes 1,4 dioxane as a carcinogen under Proposition 65.

In 1988, Yusuke Sawada, et al. did a study in which they concluded that the surfactant in RoundUp (POEA) is more toxic than RoundUp's main ingredient, glyphosate. A study by Servizi et al in 1987 found that POEA is two to three times more toxic than glyphosate, and that the synergy of the two ingredients may even be more acutely toxic than the two ingredients combined.
Glyphosate's degradation pathway shows that, depending one which soil organisms are present, glyphosate degrades into sarcosine, formaldehyde, AMPA, and Methylamine.
