Nick, anyone with a modicum of knowledge of energy measurement in the atmosphere knows that temperature is the incorrect metric to quantify energy content of the atmosphere. An HVAC engineer with only a GED has more knowledge of energy measurement in air than all your PhD climate ‘scientists’. Temperature is completely the wrong metric it is like averaging speedometer readings of all vehicles to asses fuel consumption.

Moreover, the low concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere also shows why the current models are wrong. When the CO2 is excited, some of that energy is converted to heat. But the heat goes mainly into N2 and O2 molecules which do not re-radiate the heat. They convect. Therefore the energy of radiation absorbed by the greenhouse gases is not re-radiated back to Earth. It is carried high into the atmosphere by convection, and then is radiated from below the tropopause either by exciting CO2 molecules or from the tops of clouds.

Doubling CO2 and basic physics
All that happens if you double the concentration of CO2 in air is that the absorption length is halved. So more radiant energy is absorbed and reflected back to earth at lower levels of the atmosphere than before. However the total energy balance would appear at first sight to be almost unchanged. CO2 only absorbs from 16% of the infrared wave-lengths but it happens to be the very low energy frequencies centered at -80C. Not very much energy there at all. Water vapor absorbs from almost all the frequencies including the much higher energy ones. If the greenhouse theory was correct--which it's not-- then water vapor is the elephant in the room and CO2 irrelevant.
Beyond that, the energy is not trapped at all but that's another issue.
