NATO is not some multinational partnership where the members have equal status, it’s a US tool to keep Europe firmly tied in the American camp, strategically, for defense, politically and economically. It also helps the US to continue occupying Europe. The benefits are mostly for Washington, the costs should be too (regardless of Donald’s thoughts on the matter).
2. The other nations do contribute substantially. With cash for the budget, with troops, equipment, personnel, buildings, access. And we buy US weapons - no matter how crap they are (on a truly free market they would end up in the bargain corner). We pay heavily for our own occupation and will be paying even more in the years to come.
3. Now Washington is using the military alliance to obtain a monopoly position in other areas as well, which would benefit the US and greatly harm Europe.
If it wants to compete with the Russian North Stream 2 project, it should make a better offer, that’s how the free market economy works. Instead we get maffia tactics to force us to comply.
